SmileHello! I am trying to locate a woman named Mavis, who lived in the village as recently as 2007. She has three children, Sharron, Jackie and Steve. In the 1950's she was married to an American GI by the name of Jake Gross (or possibly Goss), but they divorced and she has since remarried.
Any contact information for Mavis or one of her children would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks and I hope one day to visit!

Excellent site. My maternal grandparents came from Earlestown and Newton respectively - John Arden, brother to percy, Flo, Connie and Maggie. Winnie Hindley, daughter of William Hindley - Evergreen Villa, Park Road, Newton-le-Willows. They left the area in 1920 and lived the rest of their lives in Ashton-under-Lyne.

I believe that a great-aunt of mine had a pub in Newton-Le-Willows in the 1930s and maybe later. Her name was Ethel or Edith Priestley (or Priestly), nee Smith. Does anyone have any information about her and her family? I believe she did have children. Please email me if you do know anything since we have very little information about that side of the family and my mother (niece of the above) would be interested to know.

Told about this site by a neighbour of my brothers who had seen a message on it from Marion Wojtecki looking for my parents - what a fantastic site. My parents are Pauline and Bryan James, both worked at RAF Burtonwood & my dad also worked at the Vulcan in his early days. We lived at 4 Connaught Drive - I went to the local school & the headteacher was Miss Jackson. Funny how many years later I was the community police officer in Golborne & came across her in a care home there. My dads dad was the late Bob James and he is also related to the Slegg family. If anyone knows me or my family please get in touch

Excellent site! I was wondering how I could get in touch with a historian on this website? I was wondering if anyone realized that Peter Sergeant, Rich Merchant of Boston, MA (late 1600's) was one of the many children of Peter Serjeant SR and Margaret Ashhurt, daughter of henry Ashurst and Cassandra Bradshaw/Bradshaugh?(d/o John Bradshaw) I have an ancestor, Thomas Sergeant who showed up in America in 1676 and being a land owner. Peter dies in 1714 mentioning a nephew of his brother Henry Sergeant(desceased) and many other nieces and nephew. Peter Jr of Boston, Massachusetts was also a Trial Judge for the 1692 Witch trials of Salem and had been appointed by Gov William Phipps. I would like to get more information on the family. I have a list of children in the family and who they married. Many names in the Lancashire area look familiar.

Thanks for your reply,
Penny Kresl

What a delightful site! I lived in Newton-le-Willows from 1952 to 1953, in a row house at 58 Ashton Road (I suppose the house was torn down to make way for the M6). I have very fond memories of the village and Jim Pilling (our landlord) who took me to the bookstore and bought me books. My mom and I would walk to the bakery (wonderful smells) and also somewhere to buy fish and chips (wrapped in newspaper - wonderful). A lady named Blossom would come and help my mom clean house...she had 3 daughters, one named Lilly (I've a photo of Lilly somewhere), and I looked forward always to seeing them and playing.
